Our nut products are treated or pasteurized before being sold to consumers in North America to provide consumers with a safe and quality product. Several methods are commonly used in processing nuts, including roasting, steaming, and propylene oxide (PPO) treatment. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved PPO treatment as an acceptable form of pasteurization for almonds. PPO is a surface treatment which has been approved for use on foods since 1958, and is widely used for a variety of foods such as cocoa powder and spices.
